Last month, a tragic collision occurred between a train and a truck at the North Shore Road level crossing in Geelong, resulting in the loss of a life. The Public Transport Users Association (PTUA) extends its condolences to the family and friends of the victim.
The PTUA urgently calls for the removal of this dangerous and disruptive level crossing. We note the concerning history of increasingly frequent safety-critical problems at the site.
While this incident was the first involving a loss of life, the others have resulted in delays or cancellations of Geelong line train services, causing significant disruption for rail passengers.
PTUA regional spokesperson Paul Wescott said, “The North Shore level crossing is not only a major safety hazard but also a regular source of disruption. Passengers consistently face delays and cancellations, and the recent fatality underscores the urgent need to deal with the problem.”
The PTUA urges the State Government to prioritise the grade separation of the North Shore Road level crossing. That is crucial to ensuring the safety of rail passengers and staff, as well as pedestrians, cyclists, and road traffic navigating the area, and will eliminate a repeated source of delay for Geelong Line services.
