If govt is serious about optimising the Upfield line, they must duplicate

The Public Transport Users Association (PTUA) has called for the State Government to duplicate the Upfield line during the forthcoming Brunswick level crossing removal project.

PTUA spokesperson Daniel Bowen said that while crossing removal and new modern DDA-compliant stations would be welcome, duplication would bring the biggest benefits for train users.

“Given the close proximity of Jewell, Anstey and Brunswick stations, and the parallel Sydney Road tram route, it is understandable that the government should seek to rationalise the number of stations in this area. [1] [2]

“If this must happen, they must design the new stations with pedestrian amenity in mind, with exits at both ends of the platforms, and construct them in locations that do not compromise existing bus connections.”

Mr Bowen said that the government must ensure genuine consultation with the community on the design and location of stations, and should push ahead with upgrades to Sydney Road tram stops to provide an accessible tram service during the rail project.

“Most importantly, the single track at the northern end of the Upfield line must be duplicated, so that when the pain of the project is over, passengers will be delivered more reliable, more frequent train services.

“Right now, capacity in the City Loop is constrained. That problem will be resolved by the Metro tunnel opening. The Upfield line’s single track is the next bottleneck preventing high-frequency train services. It must be fixed – Melbourne’s north deserves nothing less,” concluded Mr Bowen.
