With the State Government failing to commit to major public transport upgrades into the growing Fishermans Bend precinct, such as the Metro 2 tunnel or even tram extensions, a plan has emerged to run zip lines into the area.
Stage one would see a zip line from a major CBD building to Fishermans Bend. Candidates sites include Eureka Tower, the Rialto, or the “Pantscraper”, likely to be determined by connections from nearby trams and trains.
Stage two would be a zip line from the west, most likely from the disused Newport power station.
Potential sites for zip lines to get people back out of Fishermans Bend are still being evaluated.
No Myki fare is expected to be charged, but users would be required to sign an indemnity waiver.
While the plan is still being assessed, it has clear benefits in eliminating waiting and connection times for passengers. This is important given the State Government’s reluctance to provide high frequency public transport services, even into inner-city areas.
It’s hoped that the plan can be developed and the zip line available for public use by April 2027.
